JM33 · Lesson 33
Coordinates of Straight Lines
Distance, slope, midpoint & section formula, and triangle centres — with coordinate diagrams.
Concept & Formula

Select a part above — Parts 2–4 have their own diagrams and mode buttons.
Part 1 · Distance
Pythagoras on the grid
Drag A and B. The horizontal and vertical legs form a right triangle; the segment AB is the hypotenuse. Each grid square is 1 unit.
Part 2 · Slope
What is slope?
Slope \(m = \dfrac{\Delta y}{\Delta x}\): how much \(y\) changes for each 1 unit step in \(x\).
Drag each slope into order — smallest → largest.
Place all four slopes, then check.
Part 3 · Mid-point & section formula
Averages on a segment
Mid-point = average of coordinates. Point P dividing AB in ratio \(m:n\) uses weighted averages. Drag A, B; adjust \(m,n\).
Part 4 · Triangle centres
Four centres
Standard geometry diagrams — no coordinate axes. Switch centre to see each construction.
